Let love guide the way forward

School Chaplain - Mr Shane McCarthy

It seems like it is one thing after another in the media these days. With terrorism, domestic violence, crime, abuse, etc we are confronted by evil on a daily basis. At times like these it can seem overwhelming and scary. Throughout Scripture, we are warned that we are involved in warfare that is bigger than us. The apostle Paul describes it this way:

12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Ephesians 6:12

So what can we do? How do we confront the evil that seems so prevalent in today’s world?

First of all we need to know ourselves. We need to know our weaknesses and our own inner evil. It is easy at times to point the finger at others but what about our own hearts, our own attitudes, prejudices, thoughts and actions. We can all be mean and selfish at times. What are we doing to be a positive, loving influence on the people and the world around us?

Secondly we cannot live in fear. Rather we have to step into the world with courage and strength. We are told that perfect love casts out fear. Instead let us go into our world to show love, respect, compassion, joy and hope. Let us not allow evil to guide our responses. Let us not repay evil with evil.

May the Lord encourage and strengthen you in times of trial and in the face of evil may you know his loving presence.
