Welcome to the MBBC Music department where your son can experience a variety of styles and genres of music.

Private Tuition

Integral to the International Baccalaureate program, students study music from Prep through to year 10 within the Primary Years and Middle Years Program.  Students who wish to develop further as musicians are encouraged to enrol in Private Tuition. From Prep to Year 12, no boy is too young or old to start learning an instrument.

Prep to year 3:

  • Percussion and Drum Kit
  • Keyboard or Piano
  • Violin

Year 4 onwards:

  • Brass
  • Woodwind
  • Guitar
  • Bass Guitar
  • Ukulele
  • Strings
  • Percussion and Drum Kit
  • Piano or Keyboard
  • Voice

Lessons are offered on an individual basis on a rotating timetable.  Lessons will be invoiced separately per term.

In consultation with the instrumental teacher and Head of Music, duo lessons may be available at a shared rate.

Annual Instrument hire is available through the college for an additional fee.

Ensembles

Primary Bands and Instrumental Ensembles

  • Year 5 Training Band (a semester two extension activity to compliment the compulsory instrumental program)
  • Beginner Concert Band (for students in year 6 onwards enrolled in private instrumental tuition)
  • Weapons of Mass Percussion (a percussion ensemble using traditional instruments for students in year 4 onwards)
  • PVC Instrument Musicians (a pitched and non-pitched percussion ensemble using non-traditional instruments for students in year 5 onwards)
  • MBBC Ukulele Society (for students in year 5 through to year 12)
  • String Ensemble (for students in year 4 onwards or by invitation)

Secondary Bands and Instrumental Ensembles

  • Beginner Concert Band (for beginning instrumentalists in year 5 through to year 12)
  • Wind Ensemble (for intermediate to advanced students enrolled in private tuition)
  • Jazz Ensemble (for intermediate to advanced students enrolled in private tuition)
  • MBBC Ukulele Society (for students in year 5 through to year 12)
  • Weapons of Mass Percussion (a percussion ensemble using traditional instruments for students in year 4 onwards)
  • PVC Instrument Musicians (a pitched and non-pitched percussion ensemble using non-traditional instruments for students in year 5 onwards)
  • Middle School Rock Band (membership by audition)
  • Senior Rock Band (membership by audition)

College Choirs

  • Treble Boys (for students in years 2 and 3)
  • Boys Chorus (for students in years 4, 5, and 6)
  • Secondary Vocal Ensemble (for students in years 7 – 12)

School and Community Performances

All students enrolled in the MBBC music program are encouraged to perform at school and community functions:

  • Full School Performance Assemblies held each term
  • Ceremonies including Captains Inauguration, Anzac Day, Remembrance Day, Easter Service, Prize Giving and Christmas Service.
  • Community events including the Manly District Halloween Parade and Concerts.
  • Combined MBBC and MBC Middle Years Music (bi-annual)
  • Combined MBC and MBBC Secondary Years Musical (bi-annual)

The Freshmen

There is something special about getting up on stage, producing music, sounding good, and getting an applause from family and friends.  This twice yearly concert is designed to provide a safe environment for which beginning musicians can experience live performance.

Between Extremes

This twice yearly concert is an opportunity for intermediate musicians to practice their live performance skills in front of an audience of family and friends.

The Sounds of MBBC

This is our end of semester one showcase concert of Ensembles and Advanced Soloists.  We may also showcase compositions and live performances completed by year 12 Music extension students within this concert.
