World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championships (WIDPSC)

In April 2011, Moreton Bay Boys’ College hosted the World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championships (WIDPSC) with over 150 students attending from some 15 countries. This was an exciting weeklong event and most entertaining, many lifelong friendships were forged and MBBC is looking forward to next years challenge. See our media coverage in News and Announcements.

As they say – all good things come to an end and sadly we had to say goodbye to all our 2011″ Worlds” competitors. What an amazing week it was! All of the competitors entertained us with their stories, insights, intellect, wit and wisdom.

While there could only be a few winners, as convenor Naomi Williams said ”You are all winners, just being here makes you a winner, competing on a world stage.”

The winners were:

  • Individual Debate: Thomas Diment, Taunton School, UK
  • Interpretive Reading: Kristine Ramsbottom, Southridge School, Canada
  • Impromptu: Cameron Ewing, The Hotchkiss School, USA
  • Public speaking: Heather Pickerell, Hong Kong School Debate Council, Hong Kong
  • After dinner speaking: Oliver Kelham, Taunton School, UK
  • Best foreign language competitor – Lena Krueger, Lessing Gymnasium Winnenden, Germany

Thanks to Naomi Williams for making it all happen, to Dr Rod Crouch, Mrs Diana Patchett,  Mr Tony Dosen and Mrs Sonja Bancroft for allowing it to happen, to MBBC and MBC staff for helping out in their holidays and to all the wonderful host families and sponsors who looked after everyone and made sure their stay was enjoyable.

Special thanks to our major sponsors Fardoulys Constructions, Bickerton Masters Architecture, Sequel, Wine & Dine’m, Loaves and Fishes express catering, Wilson’s Boathouse, Westpac, RQYS and Rotary Club.
