Language B – Japanese

If you think about it, we probably all speak a little bit of Japanese language in our everyday lives: Toshiba, Mitsubishi, Honda, Sushi, Karaoke, Anime …  It’s no wonder, given our Japanese neighbours in the capital city of Tokyo are only a short 9 hour flight away.

Through Japanese lessons at MBBC, students will develop their skills as a second language learner and expand their appreciation of cultures and traditions unlike their own. An interest and awareness of the Japanese people, culture and history will enhance their language learning. A biennial Japan Tour will also aim to improve student outcomes as well as provide an excellent opportunity to witness and experience the Japanese culture.

The International Baccalaureate Program acknowledges that learning additional languages greatly contributes to the holistic development of students. The Program aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. Learning a second language, such as Japanese, lends itself perfectly to this objective.

Japanese commences in Year 7 when all boys study Japanese (and Spanish). In Years 8 and 9 boys may choose to study Japanese while in Years 10 to 12 Japanese is an elective subject.
