Learning enhancement

21 March 2012

Within the Learning Enhancement Program, extension classes are provided to selected students from Prep to Year 9.  Students are involved in short or long term projects depending on opportunities and numbers of students.  These groups may include students from differing year levels in the Primary School and will change throughout the year.

During the Maths extension sessions the boys are encouraged to develop their mathematical thinking and are also challenged to work through some advanced problem solving tasks.  Throughout Literacy sessions we may work on developing critical and creative thinking skills, independent research tasks and external extension opportunities.

Students were nominated for these classes after consultation with class teachers at the conclusion of our annual Standardised Testing Program where the literacy and numeracy skills of all students are assessed.

Some students may access the program in Term 1 as mathematical problem solving is their strength whereas others may participate in Term 2 in the Courier Mail Spelling Bee because spelling is their strength.  Students with a strong interest and knowledge of science concepts may participate in the “Murder under the Microscope” program in Term 3 and many external competitions are available to students throughout the year including ICAS, Future Problem Solving, Days of Excellence, Da Vinci Decathlon, Maths Masters and Maths Team Challenge.

Students and parents should be aware that groupings are flexible and may change throughout the year in consultation with class teachers and according to individual student progression.

If you have any questions about the program please contact me.
