On Friday, 6 October, sailing students and coaches, together with their families, heads of both Colleges, heads of sport, the sailing support committee, and special guests, convened at Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron, as the sun set over beautiful Moreton Bay. With all boats rigged and on display as a backdrop, MBBC Chaplin Shane McCarthy, and MBC Chaplain Rev. Dr. Peter Lockhart, led the official blessing – praying for a good season and the safe return of the fleet.
Following the blessing, Mr Ken Hurling was acknowledged for his valuable contribution to the school sailing teams over many years, with one of the new boats named in his honour. We enjoyed hearing from our special guest, two time sailing Olympian Christine Bridge who then presented all student sailors with a St Christopher medal, a symbol of protection and guidance for those who embark on journeys, both physical and spiritual.
Wrapping up the formalities, the impressive achievements over the past year by the sailors was highlighted by President of the Sailing Support Committee, Mr Ken Gargan. To say it’s been the best year in the College’s history is an understatement! There certainly was an air of pride and that of excitement about the upcoming season. The evening concluded after everyone enjoyed the Spring evening with shared platters on the rigging lawn.
